Sisters Katie (Year 10) and Issie (Year 13) have both been selected to represent Team Great Britain at the World Championships in Saudi Arabia this month.

We recently caught up with Katie and Issie to hear more about being selected for Team GB, recent competitions and future goals.

How does it feel to be selected to represent Great Britain at the Fencing World Championships in Saudi Arabia?

We feel very honoured to represent Great Britain at this year’s World Championships.

Only the top 3 or 4 fencers in the country in each age group are selected by British Fencing, so qualification is extremely tough and to both be selected is amazing.

Can you describe what a typical day looks like for you in the lead-up to such a major competition?

We both normally train 5 times a week and in the run up to a big competitions we have extra sessions with our coaches and attend special training camps organised by British Fencing.

How did the European Championships in Naples go for you? Can you share some highlights or memorable moments from the competition?

Our respective GB teams (U20 and U17) both came 4th out of the 20 or so countries in the competition. We are both very proud of this achievement. This was Issie’s third time at the Euros and my first time – it was an incredible experience.

Looking forward, what are your goals and aspirations in Fencing?

We both want to carry on training hard, competing internationally and getting better. Our dream is to represent GB one day at the Olympics.

Congratulations to Katie and Issie! Wishing both of you the best of luck!
