Military Bursaries: Support for Forces Families

To ensure stability for your daughter’s education, RMS for Girls fully supports the MOD’s Continuity of Education Allowance Scheme (CEA).

By combining the CEA with our Forces’ Bursary, parents on active service who receive full CEA are only required to contribute 10% of the total school fees. We bridge the gap so you can focus on your service, knowing her future is secure.

A Home from Home

Boarding at RMS is flexible, fun, and deeply supportive.

We offer three distinct houses tailored to different age groups to ensure every girl feels at home from day one: Harris House provides a nurturing environment for our junior boarders; Zetland is a dedicated space for pupils in Years 10 and 11; and Hind House offers a more independent living experience for our Sixth Form students in Years 12 and 13.

All our houses have great character and warmth, and offer a real home from home feel. We are a family. Here, your child will sleep, study, relax and make friends, under the caring eye of an experienced housemistress and her team.

We have a growing number of military daughters and a mix of British and International students, so your daughter will feel at ease in her environment.

Flexible Boarding Options

Whether your family requires Full Boarding for overseas postings, Weekly Boarding to bridge the gap between school and a London base, or Flexi-boarding for two consistent nights a week, our houses adapt to your daughter’s needs.

Unlike many schools, we ensure every boarder—including those staying part-time—has her own dedicated, permanent space within the house. This means she never "lives out of a suitcase"; her possessions stay here, providing a vital sense of ownership, stability, and belonging even when she is home with you for the weekend.

Please note that our Forces’ Bursary is specifically for full-time boarders and is available to parents on active service who receive the full CEA. Under this arrangement, your contribution is limited to 10% of the total school fees.

Our Core Values in Action

Inclusivity: Seamless Integration

We understand that service life often involves relocations. At RMS, we prioritise a smooth transition for every girl, ensuring that whether she joins us at the start of the year or mid-term, she is immediately integrated into a community that recognises and values her unique background.

Courage: Building Resilience

We define courage as the spirit to embrace the difficult. Whether it’s navigating a parent’s deployment or stepping onto a stage for the first time, we foster the bravery your daughter needs to turn challenges into personal triumphs.

Ambition: Uninterrupted Potential

We provide the academic stability that allows your daughter to reach her full potential without interruption. By offering a consistent and inspiring learning environment, we ensure she stays on track with her goals and remains the best she can be, providing the reliable educational framework that the CEA scheme is designed to support.

Kindness: A Genuine Home from Home

Across our 300-acre campus, kindness is at the heart of everything we do. We foster a culture of empathy and active support, ensuring your daughter is always surrounded by a community that truly cares for her well-being and happiness, especially when family are stationed further away.

Perseverance: The Confidence to Keep Going

We understand that true success comes from the persistence to try again. Our community supports every girl as she navigates challenges, helping her build the stamina to succeed in her exams and beyond. We ensure she has the tools to keep moving forward, turning every obstacle into an opportunity for growth.

Integrity: Strong Moral Principles

Like the Forces, our community is built on trust and honesty. We encourage every girl to live truthfully and do the right thing, building the character and strong moral principles that will serve her for a lifetime.

FAQs

How does RMS support families using the Continuity of Education Allowance (CEA)?

We are fully committed to supporting the MOD’s CEA scheme. To provide maximum financial stability, we offer a dedicated Forces’ Bursary for full-time boarders. For parents on active service who receive the full CEA, this bursary bridges the gap so that your parental contribution is limited to just 10% of the total school fees.

At what age can my daughter start boarding under the CEA scheme?

The MOD generally allows families to claim CEA from the academic year in which a child turns 8. At RMS, we welcome boarders from Year 5 (age 9-10) providing a nurturing start to their boarding journey.

Who should I speak to about the financial process?

Our Admissions and Finance teams are well-versed in the requirements of JSP 752. We recommend speaking with your Unit Clerk or Family Services Accountant (FSA) first to confirm your mobility status, and then contacting our Admissions team to discuss how our bursary aligns with your allowance.

How do you support "Child Readiness" for girls from military backgrounds?

We understand that military children are often resilient but face unique pressures. We offer three age-appropriate houses to ensure girls are in a community that matches their maturity level. Whether she is joining a small, tight-knit junior group or a more independent Sixth Form environment, we focus on building her confidence and independence at her own pace.

What is your Exeat policy?

We offer a full boarding culture with a vibrant weekend programme. While we have scheduled Exeat weekends where girls can go home or to a guardian, we remain a “home away from home” for those whose parents may be deployed or posted overseas, ensuring no girl feels isolated.

How does the school handle frequent moves or mid-term starts?

We are experienced in seamless integration. If your posting requires a mid-term move, our academic and pastoral teams conduct thorough assessments to identify any gaps in learning caused by different curricula, ensuring your daughter catches up quickly without feeling pressured.

What support is available for SEND or specific educational needs?

RMS is an inclusive school. We provide personalised support to ensure every girl reaches her potential, regardless of how many times her previous schooling may have been interrupted.

What is the "ethos" of RMS for military families?

Our values of Inclusivity, Courage, and Ambition align closely with the service life. We nurture the bravery needed to navigate a parent’s deployment and provide the academic stability that allows girls to reach their full potential without interruption.

How reachable is the school from various postings?

RMS is exceptionally well-connected for families stationed across the UK or overseas:

Air: 30 minutes from London Heathrow.

Rail: 10-minute walk to Rickmansworth Station (22 minutes to Central London).

Road: 5-10 minutes from the M25 and M1 motorways.

What happens if a parent is deployed?

We act as a stable anchor for your daughter. Our pastoral staff are highly experienced in supporting girls through all kinds of emotional challenges. Additionally, we require all families to have a trusted adult or guardian nearby to provide an extra layer of local support.
