One of the highlights of our World Book Day celebrations was welcoming award-winning professional Manga artist, Sonia Leong, to RMS last Friday.

Renowned for her exceptional talent and extensive experience in the Manga industry, Sonia led an engaging and interactive session for students in Years 7, 8, and 9, offering a fascinating insight into her artistic journey, the history of Manga, and the nuances of professional illustration.

Award-winning Professional Manga Artist Visits RMS

The sessions began with Sonia sharing her background and experiences in the world of Manga, giving students a deeper understanding of the art form and its cultural significance. The real excitement, however, came when she led an introductory drawing workshop, teaching students how to create Manga-style faces and figures. It was remarkable to watch Sonia sketch a perfectly proportioned human figure in mere seconds — a task that would take most of us considerably longer! Her incredible talent, combined with her warmth and humour, made for a special experience.

Inspired by her visit, many students (and staff!) are now eager to continue drawing and exploring this vibrant art form. We’re also thrilled to announce that some of Sonia’s published works in Manga format will feature in our upcoming Summer Reading Challenge — an exciting RMS first.

A huge thank you to Sonia Leong for sharing her time and expertise with us.
