RMS Edge, our unique Sixth Form Curriculum, provides students the opportunity to personalise their academic programmes in line with their aspirations. Here, students are supported and challenged by dedicated subject specialists.

What do our students say?

The Edge Components

RMS Edge has eight components:

Academic Core

With 28 different courses to choose from, our Sixth Form curriculum will capitalise on your strengths and interests. To align options with abilities, interests and aspirations, our staff support students’ choice of A level subjects, and timetables are built around individual choices as much as possible.

We will work incredibly hard to ensure you leave us with the best set of results that you are capable of and hope you will do the same. It is our job to ensure you can put your best foot forward as you take your next steps in the world.

RMS Choices

Life doesn’t have a syllabus, and we believe a diverse array of experiences is the foundation of a happy, successful life. Our tailor-made curriculum empowers you to pursue your unique passions through several distinct pathways:

  • Academic Exploration: Dive deep into research with the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) or engage in collaborative inquiry through Phenomenon Based Learning.

  • Creative Innovation: Challenge your problem-solving skills with our ‘Design’ challenge option.

  • Language & Literacy: We offer specialized support through English as an Additional Language (EAL) and tailored Mandarin for native speakers.

  • Personal Development: Refine your academic approach with a focus on Study Skills or give back to the local area through Community Volunteering opportunities.

Each of these options gives you the freedom to spend two terms exploring interests beyond the standard curriculum, allowing for growth and discovery without the confines of a traditional syllabus or examination.

Futures' Education (PSHCE)

We are committed to equipping you with the practical and social skills required to navigate adulthood with confidence. Through our dedicated PSHCE lessons, we tackle the complexities of the modern world head-on.

We develop a culture of respect and awareness by exploring important themes such as consent, domestic violence, and women’s health, while encouraging intellectual maturity through discussions on cancel culture and the art of disagreeing well. To ensure you are future-ready, our program balances personal safety, such as emergency response and mental wellbeing, with professional empowerment.

You will gain a competitive edge by mastering leadership, personal branding, and networking, alongside a deep dive into diversity in the modern world, women in the workplace, and wellbeing in the professional sphere.

Finally, we demystify the mechanics of daily life by covering personal finance and the UK political system, ensuring you leave us not just as a student, but as an informed, active, and resilient citizen.

Co-Curricular

At this stage of your education, growth happens just as often outside the classroom as it does within it. We offer an abundance of co-curricular opportunities at RMS. You can immerse yourself in global diplomacy with the Model United Nations, or hone your entrepreneurial spirit through the popular Young Enterprise Programme.

For those with a passion for communication and discovery, there is the chance to write for and produce the RMSTEM Magazine.

Furthermore, we encourage you to step into Club Leadership, where you will take the reins to lead and run clubs for younger year groups, developing the mentoring and management skills essential for your future career.

Leadership Opportunities

As our oldest students, Sixth Formers are role models to the whole RMS community. From the moment you arrive, you’ll be encouraged to embrace opportunities for leadership by representing the school at open events, managing activities and mentoring younger pupils.

Formal leadership positions include head pupils, deputy head pupils, prefects, subject ambassadors, sports captains and mentors, but we are firm believers in collective leadership and want all our students to play their part in making RMS a better place.

WATCH: ‘Future leaders’

Futures' Fridays

Each week, we host industry experts for a series of seminars, engaging talks, and hands-on workshops that offer a deep dive into a wide range of career paths.

Recent sessions have spanned a variety of industries, from the technical rigour of Architecture, Aviation, and Medicine to the fast-paced worlds of Journalism, TV & Media, and Tourism.

Whether you are exploring Law, Accounting & Finance, or even looking to work with Animals, these sessions provide invaluable networking opportunities and practical insights.

We also provide targeted sessions on interview techniques, ensuring you have the professional skills needed when it comes to university and job applications.

Lectures

We host a diverse array of speakers covering everything from the purely academic to the profoundly practical, ranging from the legal complexities of Criminal Law and the environmental wonders of Antarctica to forward-thinking discussions on the jobs of the future and how to prepare for them today.

We are particularly proud of our connection with our Alumnae network, welcoming back former students who are now thriving in international business, launching innovative apps, inspiring future generations, and leading the way in global sustainability.

The programme offers tangible preparation for life after school through dedicated Apprenticeship Workshops and our LEAD employability programme, which connects you with industry experts and visiting speakers.

We also partner with specialist organisations like the SAME Driving Academy and Befriend your Boobs to ensure you are equipped with the life skills and health awareness necessary for a confident transition into adulthood.

Boardroom Discussions

These regular, small-group sessions move away from the traditional classroom dynamic, focussing on an interactive and conversational format that mirrors a professional corporate environment. Here, you will tackle the nuances of the modern professional landscape, debating topics such as the impact of AI in the workplace and the shifting balance between remote working and ‘presenteeism.’

Honing in on personal and professional growth, we also dive into the psychology of future success, addressing topics such as women in the workplace and fighting imposter syndrome, and critically analysing what good leadership truly looks like. It is an invaluable opportunity to practice articulating more complex ideas and build the confidence needed for the next stage of your journey.

The quality of teaching and availability of resources are just a few of the factors that enable the excellent progress that students at RMS make. We encourage students to add value to themselves and embrace RMS life by engaging with the vast array of co-curricular activities that are available beyond the core curriculum.
