We are thrilled to celebrate Melania, a Year 13 student at RMS and Head of Belonging in the Pupil Leadership Team, who has received an offer from the University of Cambridge to study Human, Social & Political Sciences.
In this interview, Melania shares her initial reaction to receiving the offer, the inspiration behind applying, the challenges of the application process, and the excitement of preparing for this next chapter at Cambridge.
Hello, my name is Melania, I joined RMS in Year 3 and I am currently part of the Pupil Leadership Team at RMS as the Head of Belonging. I have been offered a place at Cambridge to read Human, Social, and Political Sciences.
Congratulations! Can you share your initial reaction when you found out you had been made an offer of a place at Cambridge?
I was totally shocked and super excited at first! I really could not believe that I had been offered a place and it still has not sunk in yet! I was super happy as my offer was for the college that I wanted to go to because I felt connected to it when I visited Cambridge.
What inspired you to apply to Cambridge University?
I was inspired to apply to Cambridge due to the belief in my potential by my family and it was something I never really considered before as it seemed so out of reach. I only considered the possibility of applying to Cambridge in January of Year 12 after finding a course that combined all of my academic interests into one degree whilst allowing me to explore new opportunities. It only set in that I was going to be applying to Cambridge after I visited the University in person which inspired me to push even harder to try and get an offer.
Could you tell us about the application process? Any memorable or challenging moments?
At first, I was daunted by the application process as it seemed like a lot of additional work on top of studying for my A-levels. However, once I realised that the additional work involved further research, activities and reading about my subject I found that it was possible to balance my work for my application around my current schedule.
The most memorable part of the process was my two interviews where I was challenged but able to engage in passionate discussions around my subject with world-leading academics. The most challenging aspect of the process was my self-doubt in my academic potential as I was competing against exceptional students from all over the world.
What are you most looking forward to about studying at University?
I am looking forward to experiencing a whole new city whilst being able to immerse myself in all aspects of my subject. I am particularly excited to take part in traditions that are at the heart of being a Cambridge student such as formal dinners and ‘May balls’!
