Congratulations to Hazel on being called up to join the England Women’s U19 Futsal squad and Development Programme for the season!
After a successful training camp, Hazel is now the youngest player in the team, gaining valuable experience through skills training, tactical sessions, and strength & conditioning.
We caught up with Hazel to hear more about her experience at the England camp.
My name is Hazel and I am in Year 12 and have been at RMS since Year 8. I am currently studying Chemistry, PE, and Psychology.
How did you first get involved in futsal, and what inspired you to pursue it at such a competitive level?
I have played football since a very young age, so once I found out futsal helped to improve my skills and overall ability in football I tried it out immediately. Straight away I loved how fast-paced and skilful the game was and I started coming regularly. This season I joined an adult futsal team and now I am solely focused on futsal where I will continue to grow and develop as a player.
What was your reaction when you found out you were selected to represent England?
On Christmas Eve, I received a call saying I had been invited to two camps to trial. After the two camps, I received an email saying I had been selected for the England squad. I was completely speechless and proud of what I had achieved.
What advice would you give to other pupils at RMS who may want to pursue Futsal or other sports at a national level?
Always be willing to try new things even if it seems scary and take every opportunity you can get. Also, understand that there will always be more chances, so if you don’t get one there will be another one soon.
How did your first camp with the England futsal team go?
My first camp was an incredible experience. I learned so much from many different aspects of futsal. I was in such a high environment surrounded by other people who had a similar mindset of wanting to be the best player they could be. I came away very excited to see what’s next.
What key skills do you think futsal has helped you develop, both as a player and in other areas of your life?
Futsal has improved my teamwork, perseverance, resilience and confidence. Each of these I use on and off the court.
Hazel’s dedication and hard work have truly paid off. Congratulations again on this incredible achievement, the RMS community is so proud and will be cheering you on every step of the way!
