At RMS, our students embark on diverse paths, exemplified by Rey’s achievement of securing the Lawrence University International Student Scholarship at Lawrence University. We caught up with Rey to hear more about the journey of applying for a scholarship at a US University and future goals and ambitions.
My name is Reya, I am a Year 13 student at RMS, having joined the school in Year 7, and I study A-level Drama, Photography and History. I represent GBR and England for epee fencing, and as well as aspiring to become a professional athlete, I also want to achieve my goal of becoming a director or cinematographer.
What motivated you to apply to Lawrence University, and how did you feel when you received the scholarship?
I was motivated by the idea of new experiences and the high level of education that I would receive from Lawrence. I want to further develop myself to pursue being a professional athlete and would see the NCAA fencing in America as a step in that direction, as they would have consistent training with regular competitions!
I was, and am still, extremely excited about receiving the Lawrence University International Student Scholarship confirming my place at the university. To know what I’m doing next year brings both excitement and assurance.
What excites you most about studying in the US, and how do you think this experience will shape your future?
I am extremely excited to join Lawrence’s fencing team, developing my experience and performance as a fencer, as well as supporting fellow fencers, forming friendships with people that will last a lifetime. I am also looking forward to learning about my chosen major, and hope that it would shape what I want to achieve in the future.
What program or major will you be pursuing at Lawrence University, and why did you choose it?
I am looking at majoring in film, as I aspire to work in the film industry, with the dream of becoming a director or cinematographer. However, I also hold a love for history and drama. Therefore, I look forward to furthering my passion for them whilst pursuing my Liberal Arts degree.
Did any specific experiences at RMS help you prepare for this opportunity, either academically or personally?
I think RMS’ drive for students to not only achieve academic success, but also to encourage students to participate in extracurricular activities is heavily important when applying for US colleges. They want to see how you as a person would fit into their community, and through doing lots of extra-curricular activities they can see your personality, passion, and aspiration for your subjects.
I was also heavily supported by my Head of Year Mrs Freeman, as she helped me through the final steps of the application, and my teachers Mr Wordsworth and Miss Lawrence, as they all wrote my recommendations. I kept these teachers posted on how things were going and they were heavily supportive of my application. Just by checking in on me throughout the process, it helped me personally manage the stress, knowing I have a good support system around me!
Congratulations to Rey for all the hard work and dedication so far. We wish Rey all the best embarking on this next chapter later this year.
