Year 11 pupil Alicia has successfully secured a place in the National Youth Choir, an incredible achievement that highlights her dedication and talent in choral singing. We caught up with Alicia to hear about the audition process and choir experience.
What was the audition process like for the National Youth Choir, and how did you prepare for it?
I had to prepare an unaccompanied piece of music to sing at the audition alongside practising my aural and technical skills. During the audition, I performed my unaccompanied piece along with musicianship tests and sight singing.
How did your experience touring Finland and Estonia with the Taplow Youth Choir shape your passion for choral singing?
The Finland and Estonia choir tour was an incredible experience for me, we performed to over 200 locals at concerts and rehearsed anywhere and everywhere we could. I remember singing in baggage claim in the Finnish airport and handing out fliers to people whilst busking in the towns. I think that’s when I became really passionate about singing as I was fully immersed in rehearsals but I enjoyed myself the whole time.
What are you most looking forward to about performing with the National Youth Choir during the Easter and summer concerts?
I’m really looking forward to meeting people my age who love music as much as I do; I have a few friends from TYC in NYC now, but I’m definitely really excited to meet new people.
Do you have a favourite piece of choral music you hope to sing with the NYC or a venue you dream of performing in?
I would love to perform in the Royal Albert Hall; I went to see a NYC concert there when I was younger and the size and acoustics of the venue are amazing. The RAH also shows films with the score performed live in concert and I think being a part of that would be a dream for me.
Congratulations to Alicia – we can’t wait to hear about your performances with the National Youth Choir!
