In our latest episode of our school podcast, Stirred by the Sun, the RMS community dives deep into the rapidly evolving world of the use of AI in school.

Hosted by Headteacher Mr Carson and Head Pupils Arush and Becca, the discussion features insights from staff leading our digital strategy and students who are already using AI as a “learning companion.”

The Shift from Intimidation to Integration
Mrs. Roberts, who leads the school’s digital strategy, admits that the AI in school journey started on the “back foot” two years ago. However, the school has moved from being overwhelmed to being purpose-driven. “It was about understanding how AI could help us… saving our time so we could spend more of our time with our pupils and doing the things that we love with our subjects,” she explains.

AI as a Study Companion
Year 13 student Zahra, who plans to pursue a career in AI, shared how she uses the technology to simplify complex topics. She offers a vital perspective for all students:

AI is best used as a companion with our learning, not necessarily as a tool to replace our thinking, but as something to enhance our thinking

- Zahra, Year 13

The Human Element
While the episode explores innovative tools like Notebook LM for organising classical civilisation notes, the panel remained firm on the importance of what AI cannot do. When asked what a human does better than an AI, the answer was clear:

AI is never going to be able to motivate and encourage in the way that us humans can do

- Mrs Roberts, Deputy Head (Learning & Development)
