At RMS, our mission is to ensure that every pupil thrives and is prepared to shape their future. On Monday, 12th January, our Year 9 community came together in ‘The Space’ for an afternoon of ambitious learning and global discovery during our “East Meets West” Languages Workshop hosted by Mrs Nicola Rogers – Head of MFL.
A Real-World Language Challenge
The workshop was designed to provide a supportive environment where pupils could practise their language skills in a practical, real-life situation. The task was intentionally ambitious: teams were asked to develop a comprehensive marketing pitch for a new restaurant chain with branches in Madrid, Paris, and Beijing.
To succeed, each group had to navigate the complexities of international branding by using French, Spanish, and Mandarin. This inclusive approach ensured that whether a pupil’s passion lies in European or Asian languages, they had a vital role to play in their team’s success.
Collaborative Creativity
Using a structured business planning document, our pupils took on specific professional roles to bring their visions to life. This required not just linguistic accuracy, but also incredible teamwork.
The project included:
• Designing exciting menus tailored for international palates.
• Producing 30-second video adverts for YouTube.
• Crafting newspaper advertisements with a clear marketing message.
• Conducting customer interviews to showcase the dining experience.
It was a joy to see our pupils show such courage and creativity, proving that they are well on their way to becoming confident, global citizens.
Inspiration from the RMS Family
We were delighted to be joined by members of our school family who shared their expertise. Pupils received mentorship from Year 14 students, Lottie and Scarlett, and gained professional insights from our new Head of Marketing and Communications, Ross Collins. Their input helped the groups understand how to combine creativity with a professional edge (USPs and target audiences), ensuring their pitches were confident and assured.
Celebrating Every Individual
The afternoon concluded with a judging session based on creativity, linguistic variety, and accurate use of language. While the competition was high, the true reward was seeing how each individual grew in confidence throughout the afternoon.
