RMS for Girls was thrilled to host a visit from acclaimed novelist and screenwriter Elle McNicoll this morning, providing an unforgettable opportunity for pupils to hear about her inspiring journey and her mission to transform the representation of neurodiversity in literature.
Pupils from Cadogan House and Senior School were delighted to meet Elle, one of the most exciting talents in the children’s publishing scene. Elle is an award-winning and bestselling author whose books, including her debut A Kind of Spark, sensitively explore themes of autism and neurodiversity. AKOS is a landmark work that not only won the Blue Peter Book Award and the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize but has also been adapted into an Emmy-nominated television series, currently airing its second season.
Elle, who is both autistic and dyspraxic, is a powerful advocate for better and more authentic representation within publishing. Her work has been highly praised for its impact, with The Bookseller stating she “has transformed the representation of neurodivergent children in literature.”
The visit today also celebrated her latest heart-warming and witty novel, Role Model. This book centres on 13-year-old neurodivergent Aeriel, whose life is turned upside down when her mother is elected as the country’s most eminent politician. The visit concluded with a chance to have copies of Role Model signed.
A huge thank you to Elle for the visit and for offering our students a valuable insight into the world of writing and reinforcing the importance of inclusive storytelling.
