Year 12 pupil, Kristy, recently received a Highly Commended award for her essay entry into this year’s Northeastern University London Essay Competition, a contest open to pupils who are currently in their penultimate year of secondary education from anywhere in the world.

Kristy’s essay, entitled ‘What are the most likely implications of the economic sanctions imposed on Russia?’ was highlighted from over 5000 entries to receive this impressive accolade.

Building on this fantastic success, Kristy has also been offered a place on the WWF-UK Sustainable Futures Youth Advisory Group, an opportunity for 14 young people based in the UK to help shape the WWF-UK’s Sustainable Futures programme.

We spent some time with Kristy to hear more about these achievements and her hopes for the future.

How did you hear about the Northeastern University London Essay Competition and what made you decide to enter?

Extra reading and independent research have always been a hobby of mine. I enjoy expanding my knowledge around different topics that I have possibly never heard of.

I came across this competition run by Northeastern University London through social media, and it immediately caught my attention. The Russo-Ukrainian War is a global phenomenon, and the impacts of those economic sanctions could be felt in our daily lives. I would like to use my academic knowledge of Economics to understand what, why and how it has led to the current state of the world economy.

Can you tell us more about the essay topic?

The essay I have written is under the title of ‘What are the most likely implications of the economic sanctions imposed on Russia?’. It explores the social, economic, and political impacts Russia is experiencing as a consequence of war and some of my predictions on Russia’s economic outlook.

Why did you choose this topic?

I study Geography and Economics, so I am naturally interested in learning about current-affairs and geopolitical issues. I chose this essay question as I would like to gain a deeper understanding of the world around us, specifically what led to the global economic warfare we are facing right now.

A commendation in this essay competition is noteworthy and should be an achievement that you include in your university personal statement to demonstrate your passion and interest.

What is the WWF-UK Sustainable Futures Youth Advisory Group?

The WWF-UK Sustainable Futures Youth Advisory Group is a programme run by the British Youth Council and the Worldwide Fund for Nature; aimed to inform, inspire, and empower young people to gain a deeper understanding around sustainability as well as playing a part in building a positive future for people and nature.

How did you apply for this role?

I came across this role on WWF’s social media page. I decided to be brave and put myself forward for it.

There were two parts to the application process: the written application explaining why you would like to join the SFYAG, followed by the interview process consisting of interesting questions such as; ‘If you were a flavour of ice-cream, which one would you be and why?’. That question required a lot of thought, and I would happily introduce myself as the flavour-salted caramel from now on!

How did you feel when you heard that you were successful in getting the role?

Being chosen as one of the 14 people across the UK to be part of the group is a huge honour.

I am excited to work with a diverse range of youth voices, forge positive change and build a more sustainable future together.

What will you be doing as part of the role?

The Youth Advisory Group will be given the opportunity to represent the youth voice, run campaigns, spread awareness around sustainability along with a focus on developing individual interdisciplinary skills such as problem-solving and networking. I understand that it is an extremely precious opportunity to have, and I am looking forward to starting the programme at Easter.

What are your plans after RMS?

I am looking to study Geography and Economics at University.

I am aspiring to use my interdisciplinary skills, along with academic knowledge, to make a difference in the world, especially in developing countries, for a fair inclusive society.
