On April 30th, Year 11 pupil Reya competed at the British Fencing National Championships 2023, held in Sheffield. This prestigious event brings together the top fencers from each region of the country, making for a highly competitive field.
Despite losing just one match in the Poule rounds, Reya entered the Direct Elimination phase ranked 7th out of 57 fencers. But she showed her experience and skill throughout the day, fencing clinically and securing victory in the final against a fellow British fencer, with a final score of 15-8.
This was a particularly special achievement for Reya, who had marked this competition as her final one before her GCSE exams. It was a great way to finish before she turns her focus to her studies.
Reya was thrilled with her win, especially as she had come in second place at last year’s event.
For anyone who might be inspired to try their hand at fencing, Reya fences at the Dacorum Fencing Club at Everyone Active Hemel Hempstead. Alternatively, the Watford Fencing Club welcomes beginners and uses the RMS Sports facilities every Wednesday at 7.45pm.
Congratulations to Reya on her outstanding performance!
